Autonomous Software Development Without Surrendering Control

What is autonomous software development?

Autonomous software development is a delivery process in which AI engineering agents can plan, implement, test and review bounded software work with limited human intervention. Reliable autonomy requires more than code generation: it needs persistent project state, controlled work ownership, independent review, reproducible evidence and an authorised route into the canonical repository.

01

From coding assistance to a governed delivery process

Autocomplete and chat-based coding assistants help a person write code inside a session. An autonomous software engineering platform coordinates the wider delivery system: specification, architecture, work allocation, implementation, evidence, review, remediation and integration.

Nexus keeps that process explicit. AI workers operate on bounded assignments while the control plane records authoritative project state outside any one model conversation. Humans retain the release decision and can inspect how a delivery reached it.

  • Persistent plans and acceptance criteria
  • Parallel, fenced implementation
  • Evidence-backed review
  • Human-controlled production release
02

Parallel work needs durable authority

When multiple agents work at once, chat history cannot safely decide which assignment is current. Nexus uses durable PostgreSQL-backed state, work leases and fencing tokens so a late or replaced worker cannot silently become authoritative.

The result is recoverable multi-agent software development: a failed worker can be retried, an expired assignment can be reissued, and stale output can be rejected before canonical integration.

  • One current owner for each work slice
  • Exact repository identity
  • Deterministic scheduling decisions
  • Recoverable execution history
03

Autonomy ends at evidence, not confidence

An agent saying that a change works is not verification. Nexus is designed to collect test, build and review evidence against the exact commit proposed for integration. Independent review can reject weak evidence or return the slice for remediation.

Canonical integration remains a distinct authority. Passing a model review does not itself grant permission to merge or release, which keeps governed autonomous software development compatible with human approval policies.
